Together, they add 20cm (7.87in) of length to the bag's side compression hooks — meaning you can secure and carry long, bulky items that don't fit inside your bag. If you're a photographer with a tripod, a yoga student with a mat — or simply one of those people who carry mysteriously long packages around all day — these straps let you remain hands-free on the move.

Great use of straps.

I was unaware of the extender straps until my second trip and it was a godsend for my little tripod to carry around so it does not take up too much space inside by bag. Have not tried any other things but it does what it does well.
